Cleaning up after you have mold, mildew or fungus

Everything about basement waterproofing

When something begins to grow mold, it is very important that it is properly cleaned, as mold can create a health hazard.

Mattresses and carpets are all but unable to be cleaned, and it is usually to replace them then to try to clean them completely. Drapes and clothes can usually be washed in a washing machine. Where possible, the extremely hot water should be used. Wallpaper should be replaced, and the wall thoroughly cleaned, more then once. Sometimes it will be necessary to replace the drywall. Bleach water should be used in this cleaning to completely kill the fungus or mildew, and of course safety should be observed in the form of rubber gloves, and perhaps safety glasses where it might splash or drip. When it comes to cleaning basements, you should remove as much from the room as you can, and clean the walls thoroughly with bleach water.

The best way to take care of this problem, though, is controlling the moisture coming in. This means condensation. In areas of high humidity, like the East Coast, Dehumidifiers are a simple way to decrease moisture, and thereby, decrease the chance of mold. Stagnant air is more likely to create condensation then moving air, so a fan is also a good idea. Standard air conditioning also helps remove moisture from the air. Take care of any leaks quickly. As with most types of home repair and cleaning, if damage is done, take care of it immediately, and the long-term damage will be significantly lessened.
