Everything about basement
waterproofing
Anywhere there is moisture there is life. In the
case of tiny amounts of moisture in the walls, or on floors, this is
often mildew or mold. Moisture can seep in from the outside walls, or
can come from a leaky pipe, or any number of other sources. Mold, in
theses cases, is not the problem, but a symptom of a problem. The
presence of mold can indicate a serious foundation leak, or something as
potentially problematic. Here are some things you should look for.
Try to be aware of floor and plumbing leaks. While not so visible, they
can be found. Look for stains in the wallpaper or carpeting. Check your
basement for the same stains or discoloration. Also, check for
condensation around cracks in any concrete surface, as it may be a sign
of some type of leakage. Looking for rust is another good way to find
anywhere that moisture may be leaking into your walls.
One of the most effective ways to find a leak of this kind is by smell.
Mold, mildew, and fungus has a very distinct smell; some what musty and
damp. Where you find this smell, in carpets, or paneling, you should do
a more thorough investigation for moisture.
Once a problem is found, isolated, and fixed, then repairing must take
place. Be that a good carpet cleaning, or replacing a sheet of drywall,
it needs to be done, as mold spores can have very unpleasant affects on
your health, and the health of your family.
