Several reasons to waterproof your basement.

There are several reasons to waterproof your basement. You commonly see water build up in basements due to condensation on pipes, leaking windows, and cracks in the walls. You can see a host of problems as the result of too much water or water problems that are left unattended. Some of the most serious common problems include foundation damage, termites, and mold and mildew.

There are some obvious ways out there to keep your basement dry. You want to make sure that your home has been properly graded so that water drains away from you home and does not build up along the basement. Two other important parts of keeping your basement dry are exterior waterproofing and quickly repairing any holes or cracks in your basement walls. Some homeowners have done all of these steps and still have problems with water. If this is the case, additional measures will need to be taken.

One way you can try and keep the basement dry is with the use of a sump pump. Often this is seen as the last resort for water removal for the do-it-yourself crowd. When it comes to sump pumps you will need to choose between two different models: submersible and water powered. The submersible pump is placed underground and is powered by electricity. These pumps are very durable, lasting much longer than other types of pumps and operating very quietly. They are also more expensive than other kinds of pumps. The water pressure from your home’s plumping is what powers the water powered pump. The main disadvantage to these types of pump is that they take longer to drain the water. The advantages are that they do not require electricity and will still continue to operate in the event of a power failure.

You can also have a basement waterproofing system installed by a professional contractor. You will probably want to consult a professional if you have a constant problem with water leakage or you have a significant amount of water in your basement. There are different types of professional systems. One common type relieves the water pressure from around the house to keep water from leaking in. Other professional systems rely on the use of polyurethane spray or foam to seal the area and repair any cracks in the walls or around the windows. The foam sealant treatment is resistant to the effects of weather and can therefore last for many years.
